This lesson prepares you to: Know exactly what happens if you never ship, and stop worrying about a penalty that is not implemented.

There is no ship by deadline

Helm's seller application mentions a shipping commitment, and there is a note in the database about shipping within two business days of payment. It is worth being completely straight with you: none of it is enforced anywhere in the code today.

There is no ship by date on an order, no late shipment flag, no penalty, no automatic cancellation and no metric that measures it. Nothing counts down.

We would rather tell you that than let you discover it. A curriculum that invented a deadline to sound rigorous would be lying, and a seller who found out would stop believing the rest of it.

What actually happens if you never ship

Nothing automatic. And that is worse for you than a penalty would be.

The order sits at paid indefinitely. Your money sits with Helm indefinitely. You are never paid, because the payout process only looks at orders that have a shipment attached, and the 14 day fallback counts from a shipping date that does not exist.

No shipment means no payout, ever, not a late payout.

The buyer's move

The buyer's recourse is to open a request themselves. Because the order has not shipped, it is treated as a cancellation, and you get 24 hours to respond.

If you do not respond, it auto refunds in full. That is handled by a background process rather than by the buyer sitting there, so closing the browser changes nothing.

The buyer is told you are on a clock. If the buyer is a kid or a teen, every active parent is told as well.

And then it counts against you

Here is where it finally catches up. That auto refund is a refunded order, and refunded orders feed the refund rate that decides your payout tier. Enough of them and you drop to introductory and wait 14 days on everything.

So not shipping is not free. It costs you the sale, costs you the money in the meantime, and eventually costs you your tier. It just does not do any of that through a penalty anybody designed.

The deadlines that are real

These exist and are enforced, and track 6 covers them properly.

ClockYou have
Cancellation request, before shipping24 hours
Refund request, order under 100 dollars2 business days
Refund request, order over 100 dollars4 business days

Business days exclude weekends and five US federal holidays, because a 48 hour clock started on a Friday evening should not expire on a Sunday.
